Water Well Trust & Drillers Service Team Up to Provide a New Well for Weaverville Fire Department

The Weaverville (NC) Fire Department now has reliable access to a dedicated water source following the completion of a new well project made possible through a partnership between the Water Well Trust and Drillers Service. The well was donated in honor of the late Jamison Gibson of A 1st Choice Well Service, a respected well contractor and volunteer firefighter who passed away tragically last fall.

Prior to the project, the department faced ongoing challenges with consistent on-site water access, impacting training, equipment maintenance, and emergency preparedness. The installation of the new well system provides a dependable and sustainable water supply, strengthening daily operations and enhancing service to the surrounding community.

“Fire departments are critical to rural communities, and access to reliable water is essential for their safety and effectiveness,” said Margaret Martens, Executive Director of the Water Well Trust. “We are proud to support the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to protect their neighbors.”

The project included drilling the well, installing a pump system, and ensuring compliance with all safety and water quality standards. Donated supplies, valued at approximately $12,000, were provided by Drillers Service, Inc., and vendor partners Franklin Electric Co., Inc., and Amtrol/Worthington Enterprises, while the Weaverville Fire Department covered drilling costs. Coomer’s Well & Pump provided the labor for the installation.

Fire Marshal Kile Davis expressed appreciation for the support, noting that during Hurricane Helene the department went without water for 11 days, relying on a nearby pond to meet basic needs.

“That experience underscored the importance of having an independent and reliable water system, especially when the community depends on us,” he said.

Assistant Fire Chief Michael Hunter added that the new well significantly improves the department’s resilience. “In times of infrastructure failure, our focus must remain on life safety. This well ensures we can continue to serve our community without interruption.”

Reliable water access is essential not only for households but also for critical community services. Projects like this strengthen local infrastructure and enhance safety and resilience in rural areas.

The Water Well Trust continues to collaborate with partners nationwide to address urgent water needs in underserved communities, supporting both families and essential public services.
